A Different Kind Of Week..

I thought last week was odd, but this week has been even worse, in a good way I guess..

Work has been work. Last week was the week of destruction, this week has been the week of cranking out new applications and looking towards the rest of the summer. I have cranked out 5 separate applications in the past two weeks, and am about to create even more. The biggest project we got going is the new course catalog. At the beginning of the summer, Tiff told the editor for the catalog to contact me if she had any problems. Well, those problems entail me spending hours formatting pages. Doesn’t sound bad enough? Well what about if you have to copy the content from the catalog “editor” into FrontPage, fix it there, then paste the preview back. It is ridiculous. So we’re going to rewrite it, and I have my own ideas for the design of the back end. We’ll see how that goes over though. Tomorrow is luckily a laid back day and I am going to spend it working on the Excel Database application for the laptop orders.. and watching movies me thinks.

WUMF has been interesting in its own. I have got a lot of shit done, namely cleaning out the music library, tightening it up, general organization, and just more. There is still a ton to do. Oh, and Melvin, our adviser, is leaving UMF as of August 1st. Awesome. He is working really hard to get the upgrade done before he leaves, which I truly appreciate. There is going to be a lot of work to do now, but there was before anyways. I have to sit down at some point and get everything out on paper, organize it, and then move from there I guess. Josh is back up with UB, and they have been pirating Tuesday nights. It is nice to see someone using the studio and stuff.

Mainly, that has been my life. Work, WUMF, eating, and sleeping. I am going home tomorrow for a 4 day weekend, and will be back here Tuesday morning until Friday. Should be a nice relaxing weekend, but I guess we will see.

Basically to wrap it all up.. there is a lot going on.. a lot that needs to be done..

Fuck. Mobert has to be rewritten = /

Top 5.. Finally

Ok, so here is my top 5. It would more than likely would have been a quad hitter for one band (who other than Unkle) if Pitchfork Media wasn’t so stupid.

5. Weezer - Pork and Beans

I know.. its been out for a while, but the video is awesome and I love the beginning guitar

4. Beatles - A Day In The Life

I have been listening to it every morning at work.. First song on and last song of the day

3. Unkle - In A State

Good, off Never, Never Land which I had never heard, till Friday.

2. Unkle - Inside

Better, off Never Never Land also

1. Unkle - Glow

AMAZING! It’s going on that special playlist damn it!

$10 and a free Saturday afternoon..

So earlier in the week, Daniel called me from work and said they had found two Apple IIe’s in a storage closet at the elementary school. They were complete and even had two boxes of floppies. Did I want them? How the hell was I going to say no to that. I got home Thursday, found that they both worked, and kinda left them sitting around on Friday. Today, I was bored out of my mind. I figured, well I’ll clean my room. So I did, and while doing so I brought them into my room. Then I sat in my chair for 5 minutes, figuring out what the hell I was actually going to do with them, so I turned to Google for an answer, just like all others. I came across a site about connecting them as a terminal server to Linux machines. Bingo!

So I went through the process, and luckily had a straight through cable, so I could transfer stuff in the Apple’s RAM and then write it to the 5 1/4″ floppies. After writing them, I went on to setup the Linux machine (Pixie, which is only running folding@home 24/7), then tried to connect. Unfortunately I found out I needed to have a Null Modem, or I would have to solder shit together. Well since I am fine with spending $10 at Radio Shack, as painful as it was, I figured I would go that route. So I got the modem, put it in place, and bam.. Linux login screen for Slackware. AWESOME. I played around a bit, and now it is sitting, connected to SDF for a while.

I may have the webcam working, which is connected to Pixie and pointed right at it. We’ll see if I am that ambitious tonight ;)

Thoughts for the day..

Now in bullet form!

  • I found what I think was a bug today in professional slide show software for the web (written in PHP w/ MySQL, etc). We had the software all working, but for some reason in the really nice back-end, the thumbnails weren’t showing up for any of the photos. So we spent a good deal going through code, installing ImageMagick, and etc. The we found a section of code that didn’t make a whole lot of sense. In theory, you’re suppose to be able to use the file_get_contents() function in PHP to grab documents and their contents. Well they were trying to use this on an image, and instead of an image, it returned ASCII garbage. So at the bottom of one page there was a block that was header this and header that, and really didn’t do anything except recreate the file and send it back to the page calling it. After looking at it, I typed a line of code and eliminated 6 lines of code that was not needed at all. I mean, I am sure that someone went to some trouble creating it, but they wasted their time.
  • Facilities Management took away my key to the Student Center. How does that make sense when I run a federally regulated club (WUMF -> FCC), and need to have access to it at all times if something goes wrong. When asked what the hell I should do instead, we got told to call x7006 and dial 9 for the person working the night shift to let me in. Bullshit.
  • I am an asshole and I bring a lot on myself. Thank you High Fidelity for making me realize not only that, but that I am a lot like John Cusack’s character. Things that should probably change.. except for being a DJ (not so much right now) and music junkie
  • I am definitely eating healthier than I was.
  • My sleep pattern is back on track. Went to bed at 10pm last night after having 2 hours of sleep Monday night, and got up at 7am. That should fix it.
  • That’s all..

    Top 5

The connection at UMF is slower than shit.. Hoping may a transition period?

Anways, Top 5 for this past week..

    5. Doujah Raze - Where You Are

    Still caught up in it

    4. Failure - Stuck On You

Still caught up in this one too

    3. Jamison Parker - Everybody Wants To Rule The World

On a playlist for sexy time, this would be in there, right along with Phil Collins and the acoustic version of Everlong by Foo Fighters. (Song is off the album Punk Goes 80’s.. put Shawn to work getting me the album..)

    2. Unkle - Unreal

This was part of their opening when I saw them in NYC. Just realized it today..

    1. Unkle - No Pain, No Gain

Yea, thats right.. A double hitter for Unkle this week.. What is called the holy grail of Unkle songs has been released into the intarwebs.. and people are going nuts! Along with the news of their new album coming out in June.. I also need to get their two CD set, More Stories.. It is only available in Australia, but totally worth it, with instrumentals from War Stories.. That could come in handy..

Honorable Mention: Sally Shapiro - Find My Soul

    Top 5 List

I am going to start doing this weekly.. Its going to be essentially a Top 5 of music I have been listening to.. Here goes..

    5. Dou Live - Caught Up

For hip-hop, this stuff is pretty damn good. Too bad I just realized today that they played at Bates back in October.

    4. Doujah Raze - Where You Are

Again, for hip-hop, this stuff is pretty damn good.

    3. Unkle - Bloodstain

Its the repeating guitar rifts.. I swear it..

    2. Amon Tobin

Could be on a James Bond soundtrack if it wanted to

    1. Failure - Stuck On You

Its the guitar. I discovered this today on muxtape, and I love it. A 90’s band that was together for 7 years, and finally died off, although releasing later albums, and one that is expected soonish?

    Season Finale

This season of my life, as far as college goes, is coming to an end.. A lot has been going on and I have been busy as all fuck.. Lets get it started..

    Spring Fling Week
Yea, fuck me.. This was a fuckn rediculous week. I had a lot of ups and downs, but mostly downs. The talent show went ok, including the rehersal. Vagina Monologues was interesting, and I really wanted to be at the Water Pong tournament, but its cool. The drag show was a bitch and a half with alumni, who obviously who don’t even go here, trying to take fuckn control of the show and boss everyone else around. I almost lost it.. The dance was amazing.. Spring Fling day sucked balls.. and Dark Side of Oz was ok..

    Final Stuff
School, work, radio.. its all coming to an end, which means I have more work to do than usual. As for my classes I still have a lot of projects, papers, and etc to do. The biggest thing now is the fuckn project and presentation for AI. Bill and I are going to do a genetic algorithm on encoding software code and trying to find a solution that will take the longest to decode. As for US History, I am ready to fuckn be done with that, along with Statistics.. the class I went to the least.. As for Melcher, I will miss it, but oh well.. Work.. I still have 18 fuckn hours to work and finish off.. yey.. I have finals until Thursday of next week, and then I am out of here for a week and a half.. WOO.. I plan to sleep, and sleep, and sleep, and watch some movies, and sleep some more.. (Pause to listen to school house rock in Melchers class)

So much more.. little energy.. no type.. see ay..
